Chasing Monotypes

$65.00

This book is an indulgence by Rich Hopkins about his adventures in acquiring equipment for his home letterpress printing shop. There are 146 numbered pages sized 4 5⁄8 x 6 1⁄2, all printed on his 10×15 Heidelberg Windmill. Several pages utilize a second or third ink color to show off several displays of metal flowers and miscellaneous ornaments.

Each of the 18 chapters is composed in a different text face, giving the reader an opportunity to study and compare closely some of the legendary hot metal designs from the days when Lanston Monotype was a healthy, vibrant company and letterpress was king.

Rich confesses to being a hopeless Monotype fanatic. The book looks into the closing days of hot metal and gives a peek into the mindset back when all type was set in hot metal. The text takes you to letterpress havens from yesteryear: American Type Founders, the Kelsey Company, the U. S. Government Printing Office, Baltotype Type Foundry, plus several advertising typography houses and commercial printing firms.

The book is case-bound with letterpress-printed endsheets. Only a few copies remain, priced at $65.00 each including shipping in the USA.
